“On order and Chaos – A research with tractors on the power of self-organization in relation to chaos

Start project October 2016 till November 2017

Research into self-organisation in relations to chaos

Meetings, conversations and presetations, Virtual Reality and drone video

25 men and women for whom the old tractor is much more than a handy machine, have researched, together with artist Yanthe van Nek whether, as science says, chaos inevitably leads to emerging of patterns.

“My brain still needs to get used to it, but I do participate.” – participant

After many discussions about order, chaos and the area in between, on 10 September 2017, on a site in Frederiksoord Drenthe, this group conducted a research with their tractors on the power of self-organization in relation to chaos. The experiment was filmed from the air with a drone, and with a 360-degree camera mounted on one of the tractors.
Both videos were viewed or experienced in Galerie K38 in Roden in October / November 2017 and on the CLASH XXL Art and Music Festival 2019.

Expositie Galerie K38 Roden

November 2017

Had a great afternoon at gallery K38 in Roden: a large number of ‘my’ tractor drivers who participated in our project ‘On Order & Chaos’ came to the gallery to watch the videos that were made September 10 during their live investigation. Together searching for the pattern, science says will inevitably arise from chaos.
Installation consisted of the drone video and Virtual Reality experience. (see photo)

On Order & Chaos – Live Theater for Tractors’

In-theater research into self-organization in relation to order and chaos, using 25  tractors and their drivers on 10 September 2017

Preliminary research for my new art project involving many tractors; my first tractor driving lesson. Fantastic machine, that just looks like an inflated toy car, stand behind it and you have the feeling of standing behind a tank.

On Order & Chaos - Live Theater for Tractors'

Science says that the relationship between order and chaos is high and that self-organization is linked to chaos, chaos would inevitably result in patterns. To see if that's right and what's going on in this live theater with man and her machine, the experiment will be filmed with a drone. A 360 degree camera, mounted on one of the tractors, makes it possible to experience being part of the research into order, chaos and the area in between, with VR glasses, afterwards.

This research, carried out by farmers, laborers, ex-farmers, groundwork and their tractors will be visible from 14 October to 5 November during the exhibition JONGIII in Roden. In addition to the aerial video, the VR 360 ° video will show the visitor how it is to be part of a state of order, chaos and the area in between.

From my many preliminary talks with owners, it became clear that each machine is connected to a story, part of a history, a story on its own. Each story giving the tractor its own character. Connecting it to owner, family and surroundings.

In this experiment, two characters are in the game: the driver and his or her machine. This combination usually does not get a lot of freedom; back / forth / back / forth is their route on fields and roads. What will happen when this machine / human combination starts researching chaos?
